What I Use

Nutiva Organic Black Chia Seeds

Fresh Sweet Oranges

Water

Blender

Strainer

Spoon

How To

I made a small batch to start with. Pour 1 tablespoon of chia seeds into a cup or jar. For the next step, you can use a juicer if you have one, or do what I did if you don't! Peel 1 fresh orange and put it into the blender. Add a splash of water and blend this together. Then, hold a strainer over the cup of chia seeds and pour in the juice (about 8oz). There was a lot of pulp, so I poured in a little bit at a time and pressed the pulp against the strainer with my fingers to squeeze all of the juice out.

Stir this together and place it in the fridge to get chilled. I let my mixture sit for about 45 minutes and stirred it about every 10-15 minutes. If you're using a jar with a lid you can just shake it.

I made this right before I wanted to drink it, but to make it easier you can make this the night before and let it sit until morning. Also, you can store it in the fridge for a couple of days if you prefer to make a larger batch! The chia seeds will continue to absorb the liquid and expand.

Why It's Good

Chia seeds are very nutritious and easy to consume. They're derived from a native, South American plant called Salvia Hispanica and contain many nourishing properties. The organic black chia seeds from Nutiva  are gluten-free and contain omega-3, protein, antioxidants, and fiber. They also contain minerals such as phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium. (Nutiva)

With all of this incorporated into your diet, you'll feel a good boost with every sip!

What It's Like

Prepared this way, chia seeds become gelatinous. This drink feels like a liquid, however, has a jelly-like texture as well. With less liquid, this can become a pudding. In my opinion, this recipe is a great balance of chia jelly and fresh juice and it's delicious! To keep this consistency for larger batches, follow the 1 tablespoon of chia seeds to 8oz of liquid ratio.

The flavor of this particular blend was just wonderful. The orange I used was perfectly sweet and since I mixed it with water, it had more of a subtle and refreshing taste rather than a tangy one. I love the smell of oranges, especially sweet orange essential oil, and I love the taste! This drink has the perfect wake-me-up characteristics and is such a treat.
